The Story So Far...

I left school with the soul intentions of being Lab technician. I got a job as a Warehouseman (it was the 80’s and there was no such thing as a warehouse person in those day’s) at Brabbin and Rudds, a hardware shop at the bottom of Derby St. Once the six-week holidays had finished it was time to start college and do a Btec 1st Diploma in Science to set me off on the road to be a Lab Technician. After my first Physics lesson I realised this wasn’t the career for me but I stuck the course out in order to get my grants (which I gave to my mum for keep) and had two years of having a laugh and getting up to no good.

From then I drifted in and out of jobs. I pride myself on never having to live off the state. I’ve been a silver service waiter at JJ’s a la Carte restaurant, which lasted about two weeks. 1, I didn’t like snooty customers looking down their nose at me and 2, the Chef had a nervous affliction that made me feel slightly uncomfortable. Warehouse man (still allowed, early 90’s) at Morrisons while still at college. Building site labourer for my friends floor screeding business. Screed is a type of concrete flooring and as to be one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever had. This shitest job I’ve had was cleaning dough off machines at Warburtons bakery on a Saturday morning. Easily the most horrible job on the planet if you don’t count the poor bastard who as to mop jizz up in those Amsterdam peep show booths.

My uncle Tony got me a job at a Plant hire company. It was called Vibroplant and my title was Yardman (old fashioned grizzle nosed engineering type blokes were still allowed to use the word man right up into the mid 90’s). This involved keeping the yard in order, fixing pneumatic drills, steam cleaning machinery and going for the butty’s at break time. Not a glamorous job but I learned more about life and common sense then any college could have given me. Whilst at Vibroplant I also had a job as a lifeguard at Horwich leisure centre. I didn’t mind holding two jobs down as I always needed
money for something or the other. I packed both these jobs in after a couple of years and jetted off to Corfu to start my job as a holiday rep for club 18 – 30. Once I learned that the job was more about putting the hard sell on people to buy T shirts and excursions I decided to quit and come back home to good old blighty and carry on at Horwich Leisure Centre, Vibroplant was on it’s last legs.

This is were I spent my last “normal” job years in a number of different roles. Lifeguard, Duty Manager, Fitness Instructor, Resource Officer, Receptionist, Cleaner and organiser of numerous works do’s to name but a few.

Whilst still working at Horwich I filmed That Peter Kay Thing and Phoenix Nights. I left when we started the second series.
My first TV job was playing Terry in The Services. A one off half hour mocumentary that Peter Kay had written for a series of programmes called the comedy lab for Channel 4. I had about three lines in that. I remember the Producer wasn’t that keen on me because I didn’t have an acting background and the director saying when it came to my bit, ‘here’s your big part’ (oh matron). I remember thinking f**k you buddy we’ll see.

I’m now co writing and starring in my own TV series with Peter, I’ve never heard off the Producer or Director since.

Funny life int it.
